Artist: Katelyn Christensen
Amy on Katelyn: This girl is amazing and very dedicated to drawing magna. If you would like to see more of her awesome work please visit her Deviant Art. We are very lucky to have her doing art for The Guardian Heart Crystal series. Her ability to give life to our favorite characters through drawings goes beyond our wildest imagination.
Artist Message: Thanks for the questions. I hope you all enjoy the books so far. I know I have fun drawing for them.
I became involved in the series when Amy found me via an Internet fan art site a couple years ago. There was another artist originally working on the book with Amy, but some problems came up and I ended up being the only artist left. I guess she liked my art style, because I have been helping her with the books ever since.
Is it fun to draw the characters? If so, why?
Drawing is something I enjoy doing, so yes I would say it's fun to draw the characters. I suppose what I like most though is bringing the imagination onto paper. I enjoy seeing the chapters come to life so to speak.
Who's your favorite to draw and why?
That's a tough one. I think I like drawing them all for different reasons. I love villains, so Hyakuhei is always a pleasure to draw. Kyou also has a villain-like countenance, so he is fun as well. However, as far as character design goes, I would have to say Shinbe is my favorite. I enjoy drawing characters with flowing cloaks. I have a weird obsession with wrinkled fabric.Out of the books out so far which is your favorite?
Another tough question. I suppose it would have to be the new book, the one with vampires. Since I was a kid I have been semi-obsessed with vampires... so I am biased. I also like this one the best because I was able to redesign the characters. The original designs were based off of the first artist who worked with Amy, after she left I took over and changed them a little bit but still stuck close to her original design. When working on this new book I asked Amy if it would be okay to change everyone a little bit, I got the "okay" and started working. Kotaro and Shinbe were the ones I worked on the most. It was entertaining looking up different types of clothing, and I especially liked researching tattoo designs for Kotaro. What materials do you use to draw?
My materials are nothing more than computer printer paper, mechanical pencils, ballpoints pens, and Prisma color pencils for the covers. When did you start to draw?
I have been drawing since I was very small, or so my family says. I didn't start drawing anime until I was about eleven or so.What was the first thing you ever drew?
I'm assuming you mean without using those cheap plastic stencils right? I used those a lot as a kid. The first thing I ever remember drawing without the aid of a stencil was a little picture of Unico, an older anime I was a fan of as a child. I used to draw Sonic a lot too. Then when Sailor Moon was dubbed in English I started drawing characters off of the show. I would pause the movie and draw a sketch and then continue to watch the movie until I saw something else I wanted to draw.
